Larger Than Life: Norman Corwin on Orson Welles and Radio in the Forties

Norman Corwin (1910-2011), a pioneer in radio drama, worked with Orson Welles, another giant of that medium, throughout the 1940s. In this interview, filmed in March 2002 in Los Angeles and presented at the 2005 Orson Welles Conference in Locarno, Switzerland, Corwin analyzes Welles’s power on radio: »Orson had authority. He considered the microphone to be a friend, to be a very useful tool. There was never any sense of hesitation. He was inventive. And I think he regarded the microphone with the same respect and understanding as one regards the human ear, the ear of the person in the room with you, or the ears of a population of millions.«
